Jalkanen Pekka: Kantele septet for concert kantele, harpsichord, flute and string quartet, score.

The KANTELE SEPTET (1987) for concert kantele, harpsichord, flute and string quartet was written to acommission from the Finnish Kantele Association.

The work opens with thin muted notes on the kantele and gradually evolves into a field involving the entire compass of all the instruments in the ensemble. The crystal-clear stream of the kantele and the harpsichord scintillates underneath the mist of the string flageolets and the flute. The colourful texture seems to move and to stand still at the same time; for a moment, the Minimalist repetition dispels the sense of time as we know it. The mood and structure of the work is based on the ancient Greek mode C—Db—F—Gb—Ab—Bb.
