Jalkanen Pekka: Nunta Soaerlui for flute and piano.

Nunta Soarelui (The sun's wedding) is based on a Romanian ballad of the same name. The song is about the doomed love of the Sun and the Moon, according to an ancient Orphic belief: brother and sister cannot be married, because that would cause the end of the world.

Therefore the Moon avoids the Sun and the Sun avoids the Moon; when one is awake, the other must sleep. Two fairies, or demons, try to influence the situation: the evil and beautiful fairy Iele entices, while the good but disfigured Zine warns against incest. For now, Zine has the upper hand.

Zine - Iele - Soare has three movements based on material from the ballad tune. The original melody has been dismantled and reassembled so that it is no longer recognizable, though the chromaticism and microintervals of its mode form the basis of the mood and structure of the piece.
